Thinking about becoming a surrogate? Surrogacy is a life-changing gift that helps families who cannot conceive on their own. But before starting the process, it’s important to understand the surrogate requirements—including health, age, lifestyle, and legal criteria—to see if you’re eligible.
1. Basic Eligibility Criteria: Age, BMI, and Health

To become a surrogate in the U.S., our agency is looking for candidates who meet these basic health guidelines:
Age: Usually between 21–36 years old.
BMI: Generally below 32 for the safest pregnancy outcomes.
Pregnancy History: At least one healthy, full-term pregnancy with no major complications.
C-section and Total Delivery Number: No more than 1 C-section and max delivery number is 5.
Lifestyle: Non-smoker, no illicit drug use.
These requirements help ensure the safety and well-being of both you and the baby you’ll be carrying.
2. Lifestyle and Psychological Readiness

Being a surrogate is more than a medical journey—it’s an emotional and lifestyle commitment. Agencies often look for candidates who:
Have a stable living situation and supportive family or friends.
Can maintain healthy eating, exercise, and rest habits.
Are emotionally prepared for the unique experience of carrying a child for another family.
At EWI, we require a psychological evaluation to ensure you’re ready for the responsibilities and emotional aspects of the process.
3. Medical Screening Process

Once you’ve met the basic requirements, you’ll undergo a medical screening at the fertility clinic. This may include:
Blood work and infectious disease testing.
Uterine evaluation to confirm it’s healthy for embryo transfer.
A complete physical exam.
The goal is to ensure you’re physically able to carry a healthy pregnancy from start to finish.
4. Legal Requirements and Background Checks

Surrogacy involves important legal steps to protect both you and the intended parents. Before moving forward, you’ll:
Complete a background check for safety and security.
Work with an attorney specializing in reproductive law.
Sign a surrogacy contract covering parental rights, medical decisions, and financial arrangements.
Since surrogacy laws vary by state, working with a trusted agency helps ensure the process is fully compliant.
5. What EWI Family Global Looks For in a Surrogate Candidate

Beyond the checklist of surrogate eligibility requirements, agencies value qualities like:
A sincere desire to help others become parents.
Commitment to following medical advice and attending all appointments.
Good communication and reliability throughout the process.
Meeting the requirements to become a surrogate mother is just the first step in an incredible journey. If you feel called to help others grow their family, working with a supportive, EWI Family Global will make your surrogacy experience rewarding and well-guided from start to delivery.
